How To Completely Change the Vibe of Your Vintage Outfit by Simply Swapping Out One Piece!

In this post, I’ll show you how we quickly and easily created three completely different retro looks at the boutique, using the same cute button-down top in all three!

This new Un-Corked Big Collar Top is from The Oblong Box Shop, one of our newest American-made vintage inspired clothing vendors, that we’re super excited to be working with. The top is a wonderful mid-century inspired blouse with distinctive, yet really versatile, style. The gorgeous gold-accented cork print is topped off with a decidedly retro big collar, and finished with a row of coconut buttons. We used this lovely top as the base of three very different outfits:

  • a sock hop inspired style that’s perfect for dancing

  • a tropical summer look for a garden party or some tiki bar hopping

  • a sunny monochromatic pairing, bursting with daytime glam

Simply switching out the skirt and accessories completely changed the overall look of each outfit! Sounds amazing, right? Who doesn’t want to expand their wardrobe options with little effort, and without needing to buy a million separates?! Read on for the details of each look, and to learn how you can style similar outfits from the pieces in your closet.

Look 1: Going to the Sock Hop!

The first look pairs the Un-Corked top with the Thread & Mitre denim circle skirt (also by The Oblong Box Shop). This cute denim skirt is ready for a fun night on the dance floor! This classic skirt could easily work for western wear, but here we’ve styled it with more of a 1950’s sock hop flair, pairing the outfit with some sweet pink saddle shoes. A wide pink bangle bracelet from our vintage jewelry bar coordinates perfectly with the shoes, as well as the floppy pink ear on that adorable Erstwilder doggo brooch! Here’s a closer look at that cuteness:

A houndstooth handbag accessorizes this outfit with perfection and practicality – this generously sized 1940’s inspired purse will hold all of your essentials. The bold black and white purse also coordinates super cutely with the black & white pupper on the collar!

Look 2: Summer Tiki Style

For the next look, we put together a lil’ tiki pinup inspired get-up for ya. The cork print and coconut buttons naturally give the Un-Corked top a tropical feel, so we went with it! So super duper cute with this hibiscus print pleated skirt by Banned Apparel, adding a bit of pattern mixing fun (which works so well here because the top has a very understated print that’s more of a texture than anything, which doesn’t compete for attention with the bold print of the skirt).

The gold tones of the blouse pick up the yellow centers of the hibiscus flowers in the skirt just beautifully! To add even more warm tropical vibes, we’ve accessorized with a wooden stretch bracelet and a bronze chain necklace glittering with stones of cream, yellow ochre and brown. Pass me a Mai Tai, please!

Look 3: Monochrome Glam

Our last look is probably the most dressed up, but with an easygoing elegance that you could so easily wear for a daytime look. Slay at the office, then go live it up at a fancy happy hour, without ever needing a wardrobe change!

This sunny mustard yellow circle skirt is an easy breezy staple, one of our best sellers here at Hempton’s! With cute goes-with-anything style and awesome functional side pockets, it’s easy to see why. We also love that it’s made with care right here in the USA by Steady Clothing. How fun is this bold gold on yellow monochromatic statement look?!

Taking this yellow and gold eye-popping vision to the next level, is our ultra cute mustard yellow bow belt. Doesn’t it just tie the whole outfit together? {Pun intended.}

The wooden bracelet relates back to the nature-inspired cork print shirt, the same way the yellow belt relates to the yellow skirt. When you want to mix colors, but aren’t sure how, having 2 items of each color is an easy way to do it! We’ll cover this styling concept in a future blog post with some cute examples for ya.

So there you have it! Three completely different outfits, each with their own fun vintage vibe, that you could easily replicate with similar pieces you have in your own closet. Not happy with the current items on offer in your wardrobe? Take a gander at our online boutique and snag something new!
